What is REAP?
Refugees in Effective and Active Partnership (REAP) is an independent
organisation with the main aim of empowering refugees and asylum seekers
to
reach their full potential and to enable them to rebuild their lives within
the UK. We achieve this aim by working strategically in partnership with
others to provide a range of practical advice and support services for
individual refugees, asylum seekers, their communities and the organisations
that support them within London and in other areas where we can address
unmet needs. We also proactively respond to policy developments to
ensure that the needs of refugees and asylum seekers are considered at the highest
level.
Our aims
REAP is funded by the Association of London Government
and Hillingdon HOPE. The core aims of REAP are to:
- Address the lack of information about the entitlements and rights,
good practice and available services;
- Promote a positive image of refugees,
their needs and dispel myths;
- Engage constructively with other service
providers to provide appropriate, adequate, timely, non-discriminatory,
sensitive and effective services;
- Encourage feedback, training and support;
- Strengthen and empower organisations
to provide for their own communities needs;
- Have a high public image
and profile to meet these needs;
- Enhance the profile of refugees amongst
service providers and encourage good practice;
- Encourage refugee community
groups to form and support their development and capacity in order
that they may meet the needs of people from their own communities;
- Encourage
and support the development of networks, fora, and partnerships amongst
RCOs and between RCOs and mainstream providers of services;
- Provide
assistance to refugees to access the full range of services to which
they are entitled and act as an advocate for refugee rights in London;
- Develop and coordinate information resources to meet gaps in provision
and to avoid duplication;
- Work with others to assess the changing
needs of refugees in the area and evaluate service provision for them.
To ensure that the above objectives are achieved, REAP has been providing
services in a number of ways such as:
- Assisting the underrepresented communities to set up their organisations;
- Assisting the refugee community organisations to access funding and
training;
- Being instrumental in establishing other second-tier organisations,
i.e. the refugee fora in London;
- Providing advice and information to statutory and voluntary sector
organisations that provide services to refugees and asylum seekers;
- Acting
as a focal point to provide the right information to the media;
- Assisting
the local authorities to develop appropriate policies and procedures
for refugee communities.
