Amnesty International and Zed Books invite you to a panel discussion and drinks reception to mark the publication of Fearless Fighter.

Vera Chirwa is an extraordinary Malawian human rights activist. She and her husband Orton Chirwa, Malawi?s former Justice Minister, spent 12 years in prison without a fair trial, after receiving a death sentence. Orton died in prison. Throughout their detention, Amnesty International campaigned on behalf of the Chirwas. Now Vera tells the remarkable story of her fight for justice and human rights.

Vera Chirwa will be in discussion with renowned poet Jack Mapanje, himself a former inmate of Malawi?s jails during the life-presidency of Hastings Banda.

Vera Chirwa returns to the HRAC for a discussion on women and HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Sharing the platform will be Mary Rayner, author of the recent Amnesty International report ?I am at the lowest end of all? on the effects of HIV/AIDS on the lives of women in South Africa.

This is a subject of huge importance for millions of women in Africa. Some have been raped by infected soldiers as a weapon of war, others have been subjected to domestic and other forms of sexual coercion leading to infection. Their children may also be infected. Don?t miss this rare opportunity to discuss a large-scale problem that is seldom raised in public.

This event is organised by the Women?s Action Network (WAN). It is free of charge, but contributions to the work of the WAN would be appreciated.

The Settlement Trust Model (Housing)
A group of voluntary organisations has come together to create proposals for innovative housing solutions, aimed meeting the needs of migrants to the UK and of the wider community. The organisations are:
� The Carr Gomm Society;

� Refugee Housing Association
These original sponsors have now been joined by the Shoreditch Trust. The project is also supported financially and practically by the Greater London Authority. The organisations are grateful for advice and input which has been freely and generously given by colleagues from Tribal and Bircham Dyson Bell.
This paper has been prepared for these organisations by Campbell Tickell, a consultancy firm. It sets out a proposal for a new housing model, referred to here as a ?Settlement Trust?.

FILM: Florence? the experience of becoming a mother in exile.
This is a short documentary film made by Anna Gaudion. Central to the film are the accounts from women of why they sought asylum in the UK. One mother, a teenager from the Democratic Republic of Congo with twin boys discusses, through an interpreter, her experience of becoming a mother. The aim of the film is to give these women a voice and to provide a forum where they can be heard.

The Young Londoners? Fund
The London Development Agency (LDA) invites Expressions of Interest for the Young Londoners? Fund (YLF). The Fund will provide up to �5 million funding for Third Sector organisations.The intention of this is to enable these organisations to provide support to young Londoners on a borough, cross-borough or pan-London basis by increasing the range of services, providing more support for parents and giving young people wider opportunities to gain new skills and raise their aspirations. A key element of the fund is also about encouraging young Londoners to get involved in decision-making about the provision of services. The aim is to fund activities which promote positive opportunities for young people to develop their personal, social, emotional skills and help them with their education, training or employment needs. Helping young people to fulfil their potential will have a positive effect on their health, safety and educational outcomes and will be of wider benefit to the London economy. The YLF is targeted primarily at 8-19 year olds who face barriers to improving their life chances and are more likely to experience poor outcomes. It will, however, also provide support for those aged 19-25 who are disabled, have learning difficulties, or who are leaving care and need extra support to make the transition to adulthood.
Grants will be made to run projects that run to the period ending 31 August 2010 . We will expect to fund proposals seeking a minimum of �400,000 funding across the two-year programme.

New Voice in London: Action Learning Event
Praxis will be running A New Voice in London aims to give a voice to hidden communities of London, particularly those experiencing levels of vulnerability and exploitation. These communities include new migrants from within and outside the EU, refugees, asylum seekers, failed asylum seekers and undocumented migrants.

This event will enable participants to share common experience and with the help of drama, analyse what is happening. Advice Plus aims to help people in need access good quality advice on their legal rights and responsibilities, so that they can avoid or overcome disadvantage. Earlier this year, in Round One we awarded �30 million to 71 advice agencies across England. Advice Plus Round Two launched on the 12 November 2007, with a budget of �20 million across the nine England regions. Round Two will fund third sector legal advice services that collaborate with other advice services in their local area. Sarah Durner is setting up a cooking club training club in Hillingdon. They're looking for interested individuals (either yourselves or your contacts) to attend this free training. Anyone wishing to attend the training must be willing to run a club in a school or a children's centre. There will be 4 different cooking club models locally that target different age groups with different abilities. The clubs would target both children and parents and could be rolled out to the wider community.
Training workshops will start on the 2nd of June and run every Monday for ten weeks. The training will include a module on healthy eating and nutrition, one on cooking club leader training and one on basic food hygiene. Each module offers OCN accreditation.

Reef Television looking for families
Reef Television who are currently making a brand new show for BBC1 and are looking for families and couples to take part.
The show will help people recycle, refurbish and repair the clutter in their homes in order to raise money for themselves and a good cause of their choice. Half of the money they raise will be for a personal project the other half will be donated to charity. Reef are currently in the process of speaking to local charities to identify any supporters/volunteers/friends who might be interested in taking part and helping raise money for your charity.
If you know someone whose home is crammed with clutter and would be happy to donate half of the money they raise by selling it to charity they would be extremely grateful if you could get them to give me call as soon as possible, or email their details, so that I can have a more detailed chat with them about the show. Commission on Vulnerable Employment
(CoVE)
TUC established a Commission on Vulnerable Employment (CoVE) in 2007 to look into the situation of the 1 in 5 workers who are exposed to exploitation and dangerous conditions in the workplace. It has identified migrants as a category of workers for whom vulnerable employment conditions are a common. Typical experiences in these workplaces are: harassment and bullying, discrimination and racism, absence of security in employment contracts, unexplained or disproportionately large deductions from wage packets, payments below minimum (or accepted rate for the job) wages levels, dangerous work conditions, and activities that amount to forced labour.
CoVE researchers wish to interview people who have had these experiences. They are particularly interested in talking to people who have or are working in construction, cleaning, domestics, hospitality, retail, agriculture, factory/processing, and social care, but also wish to speak to others as well.
This phase of work will be conducted during the course of February. The interviews last approximately one hour. Interpreters can be provided if required. Information provided will be kept confidential, with details anonymised. A thank you payment of �20 will be paid to participants.

Would you appreciate chance to: discover the results of research into voluntary sector skills gaps and training needs? ; share your knowledge and experience with others to feed into the final report? ; influence policy recommendations to be pitched to government?In October this year the UK Workforce Hub and NCVO launched the Voluntary Sector Skills Survey 2007. This research highlighted a number of skills needs within the voluntary sector and identified recommendations for policy and practice. We have recently conducted a number of focus groups with front-line organisations to further explore some of these issues. We are inviting those of you who work in CVS or voluntary sector infrastructure organisations to attend a workshop where you will have an opportunity to hear the early findings of this research and to share your experiences and knowledge of skills gaps and training needs within the voluntary sector.
This workshop will allow us to ensure our findings and future policy and practice recommendations are informed by the knowledge and experiences of a wide range of voluntary organisations. Your input will feed directly into our final report and influence any policy recommendations to government.

Asphaleia is an organisation which provides a service to young asylum seekers and refugees, many of whom have recently arrived in the UK. While some have already mastered a basic degree of English, others are completely illiterate on arrival, some unable to write even their mother tongue. The young people study English, Maths and IT with us for approximately 16 weeks, after which we try to facilitate their progression into school, college or if they have permission into work. The Company Theatre launched its youth theatre initiative- Evam Youth Forum a few years back and since then has been producing quality theatre with the young which has come out of rigorous workshops and training.
It now sets out to collaborate with a youth theatre company from Istanbul, Turkey- Tiyatro 0.2 to develop a devised piece of theatre performance which will be performed in June 2008 at Prithvi Theatre & NCPA in Mumbai and at Ranga Shankara in Bangalore before it sets out to be performed at an International Youth Theatre Festival in Manchester, UK in July 2008.

The Prince?s Trust Get Started Programme for Refugees is running in February 2008 and we are currently recruiting young people who live in London onto this programme. We are targeting refugees aged 18-30 and from the following target groups: Unemployed, Educational underachievers, Those in or leaving the care system, Offenders and ex-offenders.
The Get Started programme is free, and runs for 3 days a week over 4 weeks. It is designed for young refugees who have some idea of the kind of business they would like to start but need help to gain some basic business knowledge and advice in order to make their ideas a reality.
The course meets the requirements for the ASET, Enterprise Skills for Business Level 2 Award and covers business topics including: Marketing, Branding, Business Planning, Market Research, Cash Flow and Finances, Legal Issues, Product Design and Product Production. In keeping with all Prince?s Trust programmes the training takes an informal approach using teamwork and group exercises to ensure that young people are supported and able to participate fully.

Call for information on skills needed for effective representation
The Improving Local Partnerships Unit, based at NAVCA, has commissioned some research on the skills and development needs of people who are engaged in representing the local third sector in Local Strategic Partnerships. In 2007, similar research focussed on the needs of representatives sitting on executive boards of LSPs, which led to the report ?Skilling up for LSPs? now available on the NAVCA website. http://www.navca.org.uk/

This new piece of research work, being carried out in early 2008 and called ?Stronger Voices?, will focus on skills and abilities needed by people representing the local third sector who are on thematic partnerships within LSPs. The aim of the research is to devise a set of competencies that can act as an open resource on NAVCA?s website to help in the design of future training for representatives.

This IPPR report has been produced to form the empirical basis of an episode of Channel 4?s Dispatches series on the economic characteristics of Britain?s immigrant communities and the contributions they make to the country.This report attempts to contribute fresh information about the characteristics and contribution of some of the UK?s largest immigrant communities. It presents data on a range of indicators of the socio-economic characteristics of 25 groups of people defined by their country of birth (which we refer to as ?country-of-birth groups?) living in the UK, plus those of the UK-born as a comparator. The report also explores and outlines some of the factors that shape these socioeconomic outcomes and highlights trends over time. While a complete picture cannot be drawn because of the lack of comprehensive data, we believe this report uses the best available evidence from the best available sources to present a picture of how Britain?s immigrant communities compare with each other and compare with the UK-born population across several key economic criteria.

The 2008 Grants Programme is now open to applications. Registered charities and not-for-profit arts organisations in the UK with an annual expenditure of at least �50,000, working with refugees and asylum seekers or their host communities, can apply.
The maximum size of grant available is �75,000, which can be awarded for duration of up to three years. Grants towards core costs are available to organisations that can demonstrate the impact their work is making on the quality of life of individuals or communities. The Foundation is particularly interested in work with newly arrived refugees, asylum seekers or their host communities. The Foundation does not specify precisely what types of activity it will support but some examples may include:
� facilitating the integration of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants into their host community;
� challenging media stereotypes; and
� creating opportunities for education, training or employment in the arts or another field.
